Film Production Electrical System

A journeys off road 3

Ready Power. Completely hidden.

A high powered electrical System ready for the demands of mobile filmmaking with zero loss of interior space.

Max wanted more than just the ability to charge camera batteries and run laptops. He wanted to be able to run power hungry items like studio lights silently without a noisy generator. What’s more his van was

Optimized to the last inch, the van would be meticulously packed with gear and equipment for each shoot. This left little room for anything else, let alone a high-powered electrical system suitable for the rigorous demands of mobile film production.

Together we came up with a clever solution without losing any precious interior space.

First, a custom undercarriage battery tray was commissioned. This durable insulated tray even has special heaters to keep the 5000Wh of lithium batteries at the correct temperature in subzero conditions.

Next, I fabricated a custom two part electrical panel to slide in right in between the cargo bulkhead and the driver and passenger seats. Accounting for proper heat dissipation and maintenance access the everything fit perfectly.

System Features:

-2000 watt inverter/charger: With multiple AC outlets on the interior and exterior of the van providing more than enough power for anything that can be plugged into a wall. The exterior input port allows the van’s batteries to be charged with a standard extension cord. This Victron unit also has many useful features too numerous to list here.

-Solar charging system: With two 100 watt solar panels connected to Victron charge controller that can handle twice as many.

-Engine charging: A DC-DC charge controller uses engine alternator power to charge batteries anytime the engine is running.

-Bluetooth system monitoring and control: in addition to each component having it’s own bluetooth connectivity, a battery monitoring system brings it all together with an in cabin display and control of the electrical system right on any phone or tablet.
